News

From 18 November 2025, new legislation will make it mandatory for all company directors and Persons with Significant Control (PSCs) to verify their identity with Companies House. These changes are part of the government’s broader reform of the UK company registration system, aimed at improving transparency and tackling fraud.

Who needs to verify their identity?

Identity verification will apply to:

  • All new and existing company directors
  • All PSCs (individuals who own or control a company)
  • Anyone filing documents on behalf of a company

If you are a director or PSC for more than one business, you will only need to verify your identity once.

How will verification work?

Verification can be completed in one of two ways:

  1. Direct with Companies House – Individuals will be able to verify their identity online via the Companies House service using a secure digital process.
  2. Through an authorised agent – Accountants and other registered agents will be able to complete identity verification on behalf of their clients.

The process is expected to be straightforward and similar to other digital ID checks, such as uploading a form of photo ID and taking a live photo.

When will you need to verify?

  • From 18 November 2025, anyone taking up a new role as a director or PSC will need to verify their identity before being officially appointed.
  • Existing directors and PSCs will have 12 months from the start date to complete the process.

Why is this change happening?

The reforms are designed to make the UK business environment safer and more transparent by:

  • Reducing the risk of fraudulent company appointments
  • Ensuring greater accountability for those who own and run businesses
  • Increasing confidence in the information held on the public register

What happens if you don’t verify?

Failure to verify your identity may result in restrictions, including being unable to act as a director or file documents at Companies House.

Next steps

Although there is a 12-month window to comply, it’s advisable for directors and PSCs to prepare early by ensuring they have valid identification and are ready for the verification process.
