How to contact HMRC

There are several reasons you may need to contact HMRC, you may have received a statement, a request for payment or an incorrect tax code. The most common queries usually relate to Self-Assessment or Corporation Tax.

For individuals, Sole-Traders and Partnerships

HMRC have recently released an online chat function which can be accessed at here.

Following the link under “Ask HMRC online” will allow you to ask simple queries to HMRC’s chatbot. If this is unable to help you can ask to “Speak to a HMRC adviser” and you will be placed in the queue. Your screen will then show your position in the queue and an approximate wait time.

Alternatively you can contact HMRC by phone. The number to call for self-assessment queries is 0300 200 3310.

This line is open Monday – Friday, 8am – 6pm and is closed on weekends and bank holidays.

To call HMRC you will need the following information:

  • Your Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) number
  • Your National Insurance number
  • Your address as currently listed in HMRC’s records

If you do not have this information your accountant may be able to provide it for you.

Alternatively you can send a letter with your enquiry to HMRC’s Self-Assessment address:

United Kingdom

You do not need to include a street name, city name or PO box when writing to this address.

Once again you will need to include your above information in your letter.

For Companies

Like for Self-Assessment, HMRC have recently released an online chat function which can be accessed here.

Following the link under “Ask HMRC online” will allow you to ask simple queries to HMRC’s chatbot.

Unfortunately HMRC have not yet added the functionality to speak to an adviser through the online chat.

If you are calling on behalf of a company you will need to call 0300 200 3410.

This line is open Monday – Friday, 8am – 6pm and is closed on weekends and bank holidays.

You will need to provide the following information in order to speak to HMRC regarding your company:

  • Your companies Unique Taxpayer Reference Number
  • Your company’s registered office address

Alternatively you can send a letter with your enquiry to HMRC’s Corporation Tax address:

Corporation Tax Services

HM Revenue and Customs

United Kingdom

You do not need to include a street name, city name or PO box when writing to this address.

Once again you will need to include the above information in your letter.

How can Ad Valorem Help?

We appreciate that it can take time to contact HMRC, and you may not have time to wait on hold for an advisor, especially during HMRC’s phone-line opening hours. We would be happy to assist you with any queries you may have, and as a client we are usually able to speak with HMRC on your behalf. If we are not able to do this we will need written authority from you for us to speak to HMRC on your behalf or you will need to call HMRC yourself.
